Fall Maternity session in a Gorgeous Park In Redlands by San Bernardino Photographer Focusing on techniques to engage a Busy Child

This lovely maternity session was my most difficult that year. This big brother as beautiful and as happy as he was, was very much a runner. Runners exist. They are busy children caught up in the wonder of the world. There is nothing wrong with having a child that does not want to sit still and look at a stranger holding a camera. I would describe most 2 year olds as exactly that. This little guy required that we change our expectations and adjust the approach.

This portrait shows a smiling kid and an adoring expecting family. This was after mom spun him in a dance and quickly pulled him into herself. It took play to get this perfectly imperfect portrait.

This is a moment where dad was fetching big brother. Who was flying a leaf through the air, and so to not waste time we create portraits of of mom on her own.

This was a difficult pose. Older brother was running and we needed dad and mom to work together to get this pose on the tree. This is actually a moment where dad asked to see the rock that this young man had in his pocket. He was in the portrait and that was what we cared about.

After this portrait big brother was off again and we had dad chase him down. Wasting no time during the session we created more portraits celebrating mom’s beauty.

We let big brother disengage while we walked up a small hill. He sat down to discover an ant and we stole this moment of Mom and Dad together.

Mom was hoping for just one more portrait of her family together. So we did something unconventional. We had baby boy picked up in Dad’s arms. But a secret to this image is baby boy is actually pouting to get down. He wanted to run and play. He did not want to held. I asked his parents to smile at him and tell him they loved him. This is that moment. Where a child is crying but parents are still giving praise. It is beautiful. And it is worthy. It is their story. And it is perfect imperfection.

And while dad was chasing big brother This beauty was documented and she is stunning.

So then we wanted a portrait of the big brother on his own. He was beginning to slow down by still had more energy than the 3 of us adults with coffee in hand. So dad, being that he was faster than mom was put to task again with placing this little man by this stump. He would run off. Dad would grab him and put him back. We must have done this about 5-8 times before we caught this beauty. To me it shows contentment. He was so happy just being in the element. Then he took off. Don’t be fooled.

ANd while big brother was picking up sticks and rocks right behind me this pose was requested by mom. It is a beauty. The love and joy for this coming child was palpable.
